Background of the Study

Sustainable agriculture has become a central focus in global efforts to ensure food security and environmental conservation, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. Zuru Local Government in Kebbi State, an agrarian region, has witnessed the adoption of several sustainable agriculture policies aimed at increasing food production while conserving natural resources (Fola & Bello, 2024). These policies have included initiatives focused on organic farming, soil fertility management, water conservation, and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture. Despite the importance of agriculture to the local economy, challenges such as land degradation, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to modern farming techniques have hindered the full realization of the potential benefits of sustainable agriculture in Zuru.

The Nigerian government, in partnership with international organizations and NGOs, has implemented several policies targeting food production and sustainable agricultural practices. Policies like the National Policy on Food Security and the Agricultural Transformation Agenda have emphasized increasing food production, enhancing agricultural productivity, and improving the livelihoods of farmers (Olumide & Iliyasu, 2023). This study seeks to examine the effect of these sustainable agriculture policies on food production in Zuru Local Government by analyzing the policies’ implementation, outcomes, and challenges, with a particular focus on their ability to enhance local food security.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the introduction of sustainable agriculture policies in Zuru Local Government, food production remains constrained by factors such as land degradation, lack of irrigation systems, and poor access to modern agricultural tools. The implementation of policies aimed at enhancing food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices has faced several obstacles, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and limited technical knowledge among local farmers (Mustapha et al., 2024). This study will investigate the impact of sustainable agriculture policies in improving food production and examine the barriers that hinder the effectiveness of these policies in Zuru Local Government.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effect of sustainable agriculture policies on food production in Zuru Local Government, Kebbi State.

  2. To assess the impact of sustainable farming practices on local food security in Zuru.

  3. To identify the challenges faced in implementing sustainable agriculture policies in Zuru Local Government and propose solutions.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. To what extent have sustainable agriculture policies improved food production in Zuru Local Government, Kebbi State?

  2. How have sustainable farming practices impacted food security in Zuru Local Government?

  3. What are the key challenges to the successful implementation of sustainable agriculture policies in Zuru Local Government?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Sustainable agriculture policies have significantly increased food production in Zuru Local Government, Kebbi State.

  2. Sustainable farming practices have enhanced food security and improved livelihoods in Zuru Local Government.

  3. Limited access to modern farming techniques and inadequate infrastructure are significant barriers to the successful implementation of sustainable agriculture policies in Zuru.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of sustainable agriculture policies in improving food production and enhancing food security in rural Nigeria. By focusing on Zuru Local Government, Kebbi State, the study will contribute to understanding the specific challenges faced by local farmers in implementing sustainable practices. The findings will inform policymakers, agricultural development agencies, and local stakeholders on strategies for enhancing food production through sustainable agriculture and improving food security in rural areas.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is focused on Zuru Local Government, Kebbi State, and examines the effect of sustainable agriculture policies on food production in the region. It is limited to evaluating policies at the national and local levels and their outcomes on local farming practices. The study is constrained by factors such as inadequate data on agricultural outputs and potential biases in self-reported information from farmers.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Sustainable Agriculture: Agricultural practices that meet current food production needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

  • Food Security: The state of having consistent access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to maintain a healthy life.
